Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center
(LDEC) provides recreational horseback
riding exclusively for central Virginia area
veterans with special needs and
disabilities. This program will improve the
quality of life for the participants through
activities that are positive to their cognitive,
physical, emotional, and social
well-being.

Because horseback riding gently and
rhythmically moves the rider's body in a
manner similar to a human gait, riders with
physical disabilities often show
improvement in flexibility, balance and
muscle strength. When riding a horse, the
veteran experiences power and freedom
through the horse's movement. As the
horse walks, movement is transferred to
the rider, providing a combination of
sensory, mobile and neurological
stimulation

Our program is unique in that it is provided
to the veterans at absolutely no cost to
them or their families. Visit our horse
stables and see first-hand how our
program is helping area veterans through
horseback riding. We are a NARHA
facility.
